Once she was back in the office, Olivia began pulling up every piece of information she could find on Connor Sims. It almost felt like he was toying with her at times, as she had very little to go on, and he knew it.

While it was fresh on her mind, she wanted to go and speak with Archie about what she’d learned from Connor. Having seen the state of his place, it didn’t exactly scream ‘criminal mastermind.’ And school had been a long time ago, so she wondered if the grudge had died down as time went by or whether it had been allowed to fester and grow.

It was entirely possible that Connor might have held Chris responsible for how his life had turned out. She knew it wasn’t uncommon for some people to think that all their bad luck started with one wrong decision, or rather, one wrong person.

But Olivia hesitated when she walked onto the hallway and saw Collins busy on the phone in his office. Ever since Michelle’s shooting, she’d been facing a lot more scrutiny at work. She was fighting to keep it together despite it being a physical strain for her. And there was a part of her that found herself resenting her boss for putting so much pressure on her to be all right.

Now that she had Cathy on her case too, bringing anything she did wrong back to him, it didn’t help her situation at all.

Though she couldn’t bring herself to fully blame him. In her mind, a lot of the time, she was still there in that moment, holding Michelle in her arms and willing her to live. She’d thought a lot about the memory stick that had been pushed into her hands before she lost consciousness. Despite all her protests, it had been taken into custody, and Collins had neglected to tell her what was happening with it.

All he’d said was that it was for her own protection, but Olivia knew that the last time she had run a clandestine operation of her own accord, it had ended with a shootout in a public place and a key witness in a coma.

That had been the biggest problem of all. Michelle had been their only link to the conspiracy to discredit her, and she was sure there was more to the story. The only leeway that Collins had agreed to was putting Michelle on police watch. Given that these people already had no problem with attacking amongst a crowd of people, they certainly wouldn’t have any problem turning up at the hospital to finish the job. So, she had at least two officers watching over her round the clock.

She also thought about the shooter and the look he’d given her. There wasn’t anything in his eyes but an eerie calmness, as though he was completely at peace with killing himself.

What scared her most wasn’t the act itself, but what she associated it with. She had seen that crazed look before.

When she was interviewing suspects linked to the doomsday cult.
